Part 2 of Switzerland: Day Trip to Mt Titlis and Stanserhorn
After we finished our Zurich Day Trip, we chose to stay in Lucern. This was our base for the next couple of days. We got a hotel in the old town of Lucern and we stayed at Krone Hotel. One of the things you will observe is most hotels don’t have A/C’s and given the heat wave they had provided tiny fans which we had to make do with.
Lucern is a compact lakeside city with gorgeous views of all the alps around. There is nothing much to do in the city, and we had budgeted our evenings to explore the city. However one can do many day trips from Lucern. We chose to visit Mt Titlis and Stanserhorn. We hopped on a train to Engelberg which is small alpine town and closest one to the titlis cable car station. The train journey lasted ~55 mins and from the train station to the cable car station was a quick 5 min shuttle ride. The titlis cable car is not included as part of the swiss pass however we were entitled for a 50% discount because of the swiss pass. You need to change two cable cars to get to the top. The second cable car ride is the famous TITLIS ROTAIR which is the worlds first rotating cable car. The cable car ride all the way to the top greeted us with some mesmerizing views all around.
Once we got to the top we explored the mountain and did the famous Titlis cliff walk. It’s the highest suspension bridge in Europe at 10,000 ft above sea level. Again, the views are breathtaking and we were super lucky to get a nice picture on the bridge given the amount of tourists on Mt Titlis.
Once we were done with the cliff walk, we walked around and explored the mountain, enjoyed some views and also visited a glacial cave near by. We grabbed a nice cold beer and some hot fries to beat the afternoon sun. We then headed back to Engelberg towards our next destination for the day.
Our next destination Stanserhorn was a recommendation from the SBB officer from who we purchased our Swiss pass in Zurich. You don’t find many tourists here and it was a gem recommendation and we were so glad we did it. We hopped on a quick train to the Stans station. To get to the top of the Stanserhorn mountain, you first ride a cogwheel train to the base of cable car station. The tracks were built in the 1890’s and still in operation today. This particular cable car ride was a highlight of this day trip because it’s the world’s first cable car with roofless upper deck. Of-course we were on the upper deck for our journey to the top of the mountain. The light breeze, blue skies and fantastic 360 degree panoramic views all around felt very relaxing. All of the rides were covered by Swiss pass. Once on the mountain, we just chilled, got some ice cream and enjoyed it while just looking at all the mountains all around.
We then headed back to Lucerne. Long daylight during summer means sunsets are at 9.30 pm We were super hungry and grabbed a quick dinner at a Thai place near by and that felt great. We then hopped on a boat for a nice 2 hour sunset cruise around Lake Luzern and again this was free because of our Swiss pass. We sipped some white wine as we watched the the sunset. We were exhausted towards the end of the day and just crashed as we got to our hotel room.
